Maimah Karmo is a 33-year old mother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend and author. She is also a breast cancer survivor.
On February 28, 2006, at 4:45 p.m., she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had no family history of breast cancer; and was only 32-years old at the time of her diagnosis. Born in Liberia, West Africa, she had survived three coup d’etats in her native country. Her family had come to the United States with one suitcase each. They had lost everything in the last war.
Maimah had worked 15 years to build a life for herself and was just beginning to enjoy the fruits of her labor. She had been doing all the right things – taking her vitamins, exercising and eating healthy. She didn’t fit the profile. How could this have happened?
